Google extra experiment: How long to index and maintain

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Last September I’ve conducted a ‘Does Google indexes content of div tags hidden by display:none ?‘ experiment which resolved to ‘Google indexes content of div tags hidden by display:none‘.

This time the experiment will test the speed of indexing as the rumors are it’s compromised. Apparently as of beginning of April, a new Google algorithm update is in place. Amongst other things it is speculated that the page indexing speed will be significantly reduced.

The experiment will also measure if the rankings will drop for any reason during a certain period of time.

This test will include a nonsense keyword nargosylian, and a broader existing keyphrase for which I should get a ranking for in first hundred results: “extra experiment“.

This blog post will be submitted to a couple of major Social Bookmarking websites as it is usually done when you want your pages to rank quickly.

The results will be posted as soon as the Google Alerts hit my mailbox. Follow up on rankings will be posted periodically as well.

UPDATE: The phrase nargosylian appeared some 15 minutes after writing this post as well as “extra experiment” phrase. So much for that! We’ll see if it holds during the next month or so.

UPDATE 04/13/08: Both phrases nargosylian and “extra experiment” are no longer in Google SERPs, and it seems that I’ve hit the sandbox for these terms. Will update shortly upon getting back to SERPs.

UPDATE 04/16/08: Both phrases are back in SERPs. “extra experiment” is back at #1 for exact phrase, but it used to be #1 for broad phrase search, too. Now it doesn’t show up in first 100 results, only the newly indexed page of an old blog post pinged by this one appears at #27.

UPDATE 04/22/08: “extra experiment” phrase is back at #1 for broad search. Maybe due to repeating it here more than I normally would, but I think that what we’re seeing here is a normal Google results ranking cycle. My conclusion is that the Google indexing speed is fast as it was, although there might be some other indexing/ranking algorithms or filters in motion when a more competitive search terms are involved. Those are however hard to test.

Google indexes content of div tags hidden by display:none

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

Yes folks, indeed Google indexes content of div tags hidden by display:none .

If you check the source code of my previous SEO Experiment Post, you’ll see the nonsense word ‘brundulumeyla’ . Brundulumeyla is indexed in google, and that means that you can safely hide the content from your human audience, and google will still be able to see it.

Black hat? Doesn’t have to be.

Enjoy!

Does Google indexes content of div tags hidden by display:none ?

Friday, September 14th, 2007

I’ve been trying to find out does Google indexes content of div tags hidden by display:none and found no answer. So I decided to conduct an experiment. This blog post will contain a nonsense word hidden with display:none, and in a couple of days we should see the results.

We shall see what brundulumeyla has to say.

I have found an article with an experiment on javascript generated content (AJAX) indexing. As I already knew the Google does not index such content.

Expect follow up on this post after I receive the results.

“how to make wind chimes” update

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know of some curious fact’s on my
little “how to make wind chimes” experiment. It’s been a couple of
hours since the original post, and we are now in page 2 of google
results, that is No.12 and No.15… BUT… but not with imventurer.com
website. Instead, we’re 12th with Digg - How to make wind chimes experiment and 15th with How to make wind chimes experiment (reddit.com).

Those are the firestarters Ed is talking about in 30DC Day15 and they start it quickly I may tell you!

My
guess is that since imventurer.com as a new domain doesn’t yet have the
refresh cycle those big site have, and are not yet trusted by google
100%, so we’ll see when the original blog post “how to make wind
chimes” will appear in google. Another guess is that when it does, it
will be on first results page. Fingers crossed!

Currently we are No 27 on google search for this particular keyphrase. This was one of my favorites, but as it turned out, G-trends saved me a lot of trouble dealing with this niche by telling me there isn’t much traffic there.
